Breaking with Blomkamp’s usual format of first a an hour of social commentary, and then a heist movie, Chappie reveals the heist setup after just a few minutes, and then turns into a growing-up drama in robot form. I think Neill tries to ask the same sort of questions that Blade Runner throws around, but it doesn’t work. And it’s really quite annoying. Too bad. I hope this doesn’t signal a permament change of direction for Blomkamp.
