The problem with these time-scifis is that you really have to pay attention to keep up with what’s going down. And most of them simply aren’t good enough to keep you focused.
I went into this film with the most positive of prejudice, seeing as everyone, including people whose opinions I do give a fuck about allegedly thought Mad Max Fury Road was excellent.

Breaking with Blomkamp’s usual format of first a an hour of social commentary, and then a heist movie, Chappiereveals the heist setup after just a few minutes, and then turns into a growing-up drama in robot form. I think Neill tries to ask the same sort of questions that Blade Runner throws around, but it doesn’t work. And it’s really quite annoying. Too bad. I hope this doesn’t signal a permament change of direction for Blomkamp.
